Cementerio del Este, also known as the General Cemetery of the South, is a large cemetery located in the eastern part of Caracas, Venezuela. It is one of the largest and most famous cemeteries in Latin America, covering an area of over 200 hectares.
The cemetery was founded in 1876 and was designed by architect Giulio Gilli. It is known for its neoclassical architecture, elaborate tombs, and sculptures created by some of the most renowned artists in Venezuela.
The cemetery houses the remains of many famous Venezuelans, including politicians, artists, writers, and musicians. It is also known for its lavish mausoleums and sculptures, which reflect the wealth and status of the people buried there.
Despite its beauty and historical significance, Cementerio del Este has also been a site of violence and crime, with reports of robberies and vandalism. The Venezuelan government has taken steps to improve security in the area, but visitors are advised to exercise caution when visiting the cemetery.
